A PITT ISLAND EXPERIENCE
There are two ways of getting to Pitt Island from Chatham Island - a single engined plane operated by Chatham Air or fishing boat - both equally exciting!
The flight, on a clear day, is fascinating as you not only get a good look at the south end of Chatham Island, but view the extent of Pitt Island as you approach it across Pitt Strait. What is particularly fascinating is the group of islands out to the West of Pitt - their sheer sides emerging straight from the sea - Mangere and Little Mangere dominating the cluster. Because you come in on a grass strip at the southeast end of the island, you will get a good aerial view of the landscape before landing and getting picked up by your hosts.

The alternative is by fishing boat. There are several boat owners with passenger licences who can transport you across Pitt Strait. This journey usually takes an hour and leaves from Owenga in the south of Chatham Island and comes into Flower Pot at the north of Pitt Island.
This is another great way to see the outlying islands of Mangere and Little Mangere on a finer day.
